This lecture will cover the unique aspects of pediatric trauma, from epidemiology and physiology that separate pediatric and adult trauma. Learn how the anatomy of a child informs the injury pattern and why mechanism matters. Learn what is meant by "falling off the cliff" when talking about pediatric shock and how to avoid it. After attending this lecture, you will be able to confidently manage the next pediatric trauma patient from prehospital to the emergency department.

Objectives:

  1. Review the current landscape of pediatric trauma
  2. Discuss physiologic differences between adults and children
  3. Review how the mechanism informs the management
  4. Evaluate how to approach a pediatric trauma patient
  5. Review management pearls and pitfalls
  6. Identify where we are headed in the management of pediatric traumatic injury
